Since I don't have much money but still am crazy enough to want to take this trip, I am looking into finding food that doesn't cost much. Roadkill, wild edible plants, Dumpsters...these are all opportunities for free food...
I've never eaten roadkill...and if I do, I will make sure it hasn't been dead long...and I'll cook it well. Tuck isn't too keen on the idea of eating roadkill...but if I'm doing most of the cooking....
Wild greens can be very nutritious and tasty. I'm already familiar with a few wild greens, but it would be beneficial to know more 'weeds' that are good to eat.
I bought a book for identifying wild edible plants: Peterson Field Guide: Edible Wild Plants.
I bought a book for identifying wild edible plants: Peterson Field Guide: Edible Wild Plants.
There are some color photos and many drawings. Both together greatly help identify the unknown.
The author also warns you about poisonous look-alike's, if the plant is dangerous at the wrong time of year, or if too much of a plant can make you sick.
Harvesting wild edibles can be time-consuming, and won't provide the huge amount of calories necessary for biking all day, but will provide fresh veggies. I'll be careful about where I pick my salads....farmer's fields are often sprayed with chemicals and roadsides are very filthy...only in places where chemicals and fossil fuels are unlikely will I pick...
Dumpsters...
I've never gone Dumpster-diving before, so this will be a totally new experience! I know grocery stores throw out huge amounts of food...what a waste! If I can utilize some of it, that would be great...good for my wallet, and good that less food was wasted...
Yes, I will also be cautious in scavenging castaway food...and only eat what is still sealed.
One other way I am going to try to reduce food costs is buying in bulk. I bought bulk oats, rice, and wheat for making into bread, granola, cookies, and other tasty, filling food.
These are my ideas before we leave...I'll inform you of the reality of our food when we figure out what actually works for us...

Love those weeds that need to be "boiled in three changes of water" before being consumed. Makes an unexpected liaison with the term "processed foods." We've eaten road kill before, but it was harvested immediately after being "sown":) Happy trails, Alex.
